Dear Mr. Secretary General Mr. Anders Fogh Rasmussen
As you are aware the Turkish state has occupied the Northern Kurdistan “Turkish Kurdistan” since its establishment in 1923 and has being fighting the Kurdish people since then. According to Turkish official statements, the state of Turkey proclaims proudly that it has eliminated literally 28 Kurdish “terrorist” [liberation] movements in modern Turkish history.
It is a fact that Turkey got an upper hand in fighting Kurdish people after its membership in NATO in 1952.
Turkey has not only waged a rougher and harsher war against Kurdish people since 1952, but has also got political, diplomatic and logistic support from country members of NATO. Turkey’s war against Kurdish people has left behind thousands of deaths, more than 4 thousanddestroyed villages and a few millions of Kurdish refuges many of them being deported by force for example to the city of Istanbul. There are thousands of political prisoners and there is evidence of many massacres of civilians, including political assassination. Kurdistan as a geographic area is otherwise consciously and deliberately ignored by the state of Turkey. There are no industries and the infrastructure is still primitive in Kurdistan, whilst the infrastructure in the Turkish part of Turkey seems to be that of a developed country. The unemployment in Kurdistan is very high. Turkey has recognized the existence of the Kurds only on rather few papers in the court of EU.
Turkey terrorizes the Kurdish civilian population systematically for example by using military vehicles as “Police Force” and flying warplanes at a very low altitude over the Kurdish civilians while breaking the sound barrier.
In daily practices Turkey is the most racist and uncivilized colonizer in history. It denies the very existence of Kurdish people and uses only the language of power. Turkey’s war against us Kurds goes beyond its own territory. Turkey haunts and pursues Kurds in other parts of Kurdistan too, for example assisting Iran in killing the “Iranian Kurds”.
We know that NATO, as a military treaty organization, has its political and military tasks, which has nothing to do with the Kurdish national liberation movement. Many of NATO members are civilized European countries and have some kind of a history of colonization and are well aware of the rights of nations to self determination and the cry of a nation for freedom.
There are some specific circumstances that make difference between Turkey and other NATO members. Turkey uses NATO as a military and as a political tool to suppress the people of Kurdistan and unfortunately has got diplomatic support in its war against innocent Kurdish people. We therefore ask NATO as an organization and the member countries of NATO to review the policy of Turkey’s membership and take a look at the legitimacy of Turkey’s use of NATO as a military and political tool against Kurdish people.
We do believe that NATO does not want to violate the terms of the Geneva Conventions, the charters of Human Rights or engage in any other kind of violation against innocent civilians, for example in Kurdistan.
We ask you kindly not to support Turkey in its war against Kurdish people. Turkish democracy for the Kurdish population in Turkey is nothing more than a political disaster and we do believe that the member countries of NATO can instead help so that the Kurdish problem solves by peaceful, democratic and political means.
We are a Kurdish political party struggling against Iran’s occupation in East Kurdistan “Iranian Kurdistan”. There are many documents which reveal the military and political partnership of Iran and Turkey against the struggle of Kurdish people for freedom. As you know we, as Kurdish people, are a victim of a non natural of balance of power in the region.
Yours sincerely,
On behalf of the Social Democratic Party of Kurdistan and yours truly,
Member of the Executive Committee of the Social Democratic Party of Kurdistan
